Definition

The true Self, eternal consciousness beyond body and mind.

Meaning

Krishna teaches that weapons cannot cut the Self, fire cannot burn it; grief over death of bodies is born of ignorance of atman.

Etymology

Sanskrit atman, breath, self, essence; the reflexive "oneself".
